			<link>http://giip.org/content/view/138/40/</link>
			<description>

Overcoming obstacles and pursuing her dreams are two of the
life skills Katie Roper says she acquired at UCSC, where several
professors encouraged her to take a hands-on approach to her education.

Roper had always wanted to work in Africa, and with the support of
faculty mentors, she arranged two separate internships in Kenya, where
she produced documentary films about environmental sustainability.

			<link>http://giip.org/content/view/137/40/</link>
			<description>

&amp;ldquo;What kind of person do you want to become?&amp;rdquo;

This
was the booming question that guest speaker Alan Richards posed for
students at his lecture Tuesday, Dec. 4 titled, &amp;ldquo;Today&amp;rsquo;s Youth, and
Global Crises in Justice and Nature.&amp;rdquo;

The seminar was the
beginning of the Colloquium Series for the Global Information
Internship Program (GIIP), a student-run program that focuses on youth
activism involving an array of national and international issues.

Global Information Internship Program (http://giip.ucsc.edu) and the
Progressive Technology Project (http://progressivetech.org). TechCamp was held twice this summer in St Paul, MN and Santa Cruz, CA. We saw 80+ community organizers for all of the US and had a great deal of fun learning about technology can be used by community-led organizers.
