Letter From the Director- Spring 09

Last year was truly path-breaking for the GIIP community.  After several years of negotiation, the GIIP-inspired Sociology intensive major and minor in Global Information and Social Enterprise Studies (GISES) was approved by the Academic Senate in June.  We are grateful for the support of Andy Szasz, , the Chair of Sociology who navigated the proposal through the administration, and the tens of faculty in several academic divisions for having the confidence to support GIIP’s unique vision of using information technology to advance social justice and sustainable development.

New Sociology Program Based on GIIP’s Method

    GIIP has always been about connecting the theory and practice of infoactivism. Now, motivated students have the opportunity to delve deeper into that connection than ever before! Thanks to a whole year of hard work by our director Paul Lubeck, GIIP and the Sociology department have developed an entirely new minor and honors quality major in Global Information and Social Enterprise Studies (GISES).

GIIP Fellow Katie Roper Profiled in Currents

Katie Roper Overcoming obstacles and pursuing her dreams are two of the life skills Katie Roper says she acquired at UCSC, where several professors encouraged her to take a hands-on approach to her education.

Roper had always wanted to work in Africa, and with the support of faculty mentors, she arranged two separate internships in Kenya, where she produced documentary films about environmental sustainability.

GIIP Illuminates Ways of Productive Activism

“What kind of person do you want to become?”

This was the booming question that guest speaker Alan Richards posed for students at his lecture Tuesday, Dec. 4 titled, “Today’s Youth, and Global Crises in Justice and Nature.”

The seminar was the beginning of the Colloquium Series for the Global Information Internship Program (GIIP), a student-run program that focuses on youth activism involving an array of national and international issues.
